Exercise 7: Read the following text and choose the best answer for the questions below.

Large cities often have problems that small towns and rural areas do not have. Two of the biggest problems are heavy traffic and the pollution that cars create. Of course, traffic problems and pollution are not only found in big cities. However, the higher populations and larger number of cars on the roads in cities can make the problems happen more often and with more noticeable effects.

One of the most common traffic problems the large cities have is congestion. As the population of a city increases, so does the number of cars on the road. Cities cannot always improve the number and size of their roads and highways to keep up with the number of cars. The result is traffic congestion, or traffic jams.

When traffic jams happen, cars that are stuck in the congestion continue to run their engines. This creates pollution and is a big problem. Pollution causes health problems for the people in cities and also hurts the environment.

1. Where do traffic problems and pollution frequently happen?

            A. Small towns         B. Rural areas           C. Big cities              D. Remote villages

2. According to the passage, what causes traffic congestion in big cities?

            A. A lot of city highways.               B. Too many cars on the roads.

            C. Careless drivers.                          D. Less traffic signs on the streets.

3. The high number of cars is caused by _________.

            A. urban planning                             B. traffic congestion

C. environmental pollution             D. the population

4. The highway and road network is ________ of meeting the requirement of increasing number of vehicles.

            A. full                         B. aware                     C. incapable              D. uncertain

5. Which of the followings is NOT true?

A. Only big cities have the problem of pollution.

B. Traffic jams cause pollution

C. Pollution is a major problem in big cities.

D. Pollution causes health and environmental problems.

Exercise 8: Read the following text and decide whether the following statements are true or false.

Have you ever read Alice In Wonderland, by Lewis Carol? I did and I really like it. It’s an adventure story full of magic and danger. Yesterday I saw Tim Burton’s version of the film at the cinema.

This story is about Alice, who is now a teenager. A man wants to marry her, but she runs away and falls down a rabbit hole. She travels to Wonderland, which she has visited before as a child, and meets a lot of amazing characters on her adventures.

There are a lot of good special effects in the film. The Red Queen, played by Helena Bonham Carter, is very scary, and Johnny Depp is brilliant as the Mad Hatter. He has acted in a lot of films before but this is my favourite one. Mia Waslkowska is good as Alice; this is her first big film and I think she’s going to become a big star!

Overall, I think this is a good film for teenagers, but it’s a bit long. You should see it if you like fantasy and adventure, but don’t go if you like romances: it’s not a love story.

                                                                                                            Charlie, Manchester, UK

1. Alice in Wonderland was directed by Lewis Carol.

2. Alice is still in her childhood.

3. The special effects in the films are good.

4. Johnny Depp played his first role in this film.

5. The writer of the report thinks that the film is a good film for teenagers and romance lovers.

Thank you for buying our driverless car. Before you operate this vehicle, please note the following information. Although this car runs on renewable energy, at the moment it can only use solar energy. We’re working on other energy sources so that future version will be able to run on wind power and hydropower. When the car’s power gets to 30 percent, you will be alerted. In case power gets below 10 percent, you should avoid using the vehicle until it gets fully charged. When sunlight isn’t available, this car can also use power from our charging stations. They are available at gas stations all over the country so it won’t take long to get there from your home. One of my favourite films is Tom and Jerry. It’s a series of cartoons with two main characters: Tom and Jerry. Tom is a cat and Jerry is a mouse. Both of them are quite clever. Although they live in the same house, they often play tricks on each other. Sometimes they get angry, but they have good friendship and help each other when they are in difficult situations. What I love best about the film is true friendship is always the best gift in our lives.
