1. Định nghĩa về Therefore
“Therefore” [ˈðerfɔr] phát âm theo Anh-Mỹ và [ˈðeə(r)fɔː(r)] phát âm theo Anh-Anh
“Therefore” là một trạng từ (adv) mang nghĩa “vì vậy”, “bởi vậy”, “do đó”, “vì thế”.
2. Cách dùng Therefore
2.1 “Therefore” được dùng để
+ Liên kết hai vế câu để thể hiện nguyên nhân và kết quả
+ Tăng thêm độ kết nối giữa hai vế trong câu
Ví dụ:
- The weather was cold. Therefore, she wore a sweater.
Thời tiết rét lạnh. Vì vậy, cô ấy đã mặc một chiếc áo len.
- People who work hard enjoy good results. Therefore, you should try your best.
Những người làm việc chăm chỉ sẽ được nhận thành quả tốt đẹp. Do đó, bạn nên cố gắng hết mình.
2.2 “Therefore” đứng vị trí trong câu như sau
+ Đầu câu văn
Ví dụ:
- Therefore, Mark is received the right of inheritance from his father, he is the oldest son
- Vì vậy, Mark được nhận quyền thừa kế từ cha, anh ấy là con trai cả.
+ Ở giữa câu văn, ngăn cách mệnh đề sau dấu chấm phẩy.
Ví dụ:
- The tropical storm Linda is one of the deadliest storms ever hit South Vietnam, the storm, therefore, damaged people and infrastructures.
- Cơn bão nhiệt đới Linda là một trong những cơn bão chết chóc nhất từng đổ bộ vào miền Nam Việt Nam, do đó, nó đã gây thiệt hại cho con người và nhiều cơ sở hạ tầng.
+ Thường đứng sau từ “And”
Ví dụ:
- You had no basic knowledge and therefore you failed an exam.
- Bạn không có kiến thức nền tảng vì vậy bạn đã trượt bài kiểm tra.
+ Thường đứng cuối câu, có dấu phẩy trước nó
Ví dụ:
- Lany didn’t study. He failed a final exam, therefore.
- Lany đã không học bài. do đó anh ấy đã trượt bài kiểm tra cuối kỳ.
+ Khi tách hai mệnh đề độc lập, đặt dấu “ ; “ trước therefore
Ví dụ:
- Marry loves musicals, therefore, she often acts in musicals in her school's club.
- Marry yêu thích những vở nhạc kịch, do đó, cô ấy thường diễn nhạc kịch trong câu lạc bộ của trường cô ấy.
3. Cách phân biệt Therefore
Bên cạnh Therefore còn có so, thus, hence đều có nghĩa tương đối là “vì vậy” tuy có nghĩa giống nhau những hoàn cảnh sử dụng lại khác nhau
3.1 So
- Liên từ chỉ kết quả, không dùng ở đầu câu văn mà ở giữa câu, cách dùng phổ biến trong văn nói và không trang trọng
Ví dụ:
- Mai saved a lot of money, so she wants to build a new house for her family
- Mai đã tiết kiệm được khoản tiền lớn vì vậy cô ấy muốn xây một ngôi nhà mới cho gia đình
3.2 Hence
- Thường được dùng trong thì tương lai hoặc câu điều kiện, nó là một trạng từ và không kết hợp được trong hai mệnh đề độc lập
Ví dụ:
- The Covid-19 epidemic is getting more and more complicated. Hence the government will have to proceed with caution.
- Dịch bệnh Covid-19 ngày càng phức tạp hơn. Do đó, chính phủ sẽ phải tiến hành một cách thận trọng.
3.3 Thus
- Có thể đừng đầu câu, thường dùng trong thì quá khứ, hiện tại và đưa ra một kết luận, không nối được hai mệnh đề độc lập, cách dùng thoải mái, thân mật hơn trong câu văn.
Ví dụ:
- It is tearing down thus they decided not to go picnic
- Ngoài trời đang mưa nặng hạt vì vậy họ quyết định không đi cắm trại
3.4 Therefore
- Biểu thị lý do tại sao, thường được dùng trong văn viết, trường hợp trang trọng, các chứng minh khoa học.
Ví dụ:
- Edin stole a motorbike. Therefore, he was punished.
- Edin đã ăn cắp một chiếc xe máy. Vì vậy, anh ấy đã bị trừng phạt
Lưu ý khi dùng “Therefore”
- Khi dùng từ “therefore” để phân cách các mệnh đề độc lập, ngăn cách bằng dấu " ; " nhưng không được dùng trong câu chứa các mệnh đề phụ thuộc lẫn nhau và không được đứng đằng sau câu văn.
Ví dụ:
- Florida is a coastal state; therefore, It has many beaches.
- Florida là một tiểu bang ven biển do đó nó có nhiều bãi biển.
