1. Định nghĩa và cấu trúc

“The number of” dùng để nói về số lượng lớn và được hiểu theo hai nghĩa:
Nghĩa số lượng: dùng để diễn tả số lượng tương đối nhiều. Trong những cấu trúc thông thường, “The number of”đi với danh từ số nhiều, nhưng động từ trong câu vẫn được chia ở ngôi thứ ba số ít.
E.g:
The number of Olympic athletes rises this year. (Số lượng vận động viên Olympic tăng lên trong năm nay).
The number of living pandas is about 1000. (Số lượng gấu trúc còn sống là khoảng 1000 con).
Nghĩa tính chất: Với một số trường đặc biệt thì động từ theo sau “The number of” được chia ở ngôi thứ ba số nhiều mang tính chất của danh từ.
E.g:
Today, the number of children are taller than in the past. (Ngày này, nhiều trẻ em cao hơn so với trước đây).
The number of students in that class are small. (Số học sinh trong lớp này đều nhỏ tuổi).
2. Cách dùng A number of

‘A number of’ có thể dịch nghĩa là “một lượng” hoặc “một vài” , “một số” (dùng để diễn tả một số trong tổng thể). Cấu trúc cố định, a number of đi với danh từ số nhiều, động từ chia theo ngôi ba số nhiều.
Người dùng hay nhầm lẫn ở dấu hiệu “a” và nghĩ cụm từ này chỉ số ít, nên thường chia động từ ở ngôi ba số ít, hoặc danh từ để dạng số ít,… dẫn đến những lỗi sai ngữ pháp.
E.g:
A number of people have expressed interest in the show tonight. (Một số người đã bày tỏ sự thích thú đối với buổi trình diễn tối nay).
There have been a number of complaints about the new delivery service. (Đã có một vài lời than phiền về dịch vụ vận chuyển).
A number of attractive graphs were used in the paper, which made the difficult concepts clearer to laypeople. (Một vài biểu đồ bắt mắt đã được sử dụng trong bài viết này, giúp cho người không chuyên có thể hiểu rõ hơn).
3. Phân biệt The number of và A number of

Chú ý khi dùng The number of và A number of
Danh từ theo sau the number of và a number of đều là danh từ đếm được số nhiều, và không theo sau bởi danh từ không đếm được như water, hair, furniture,…
Có hai dạng danh từ đếm được số nhiều cần lưu ý:
- Danh từ số nhiều có quy tắc: days, books, streets, balls,…
- Danh từ số nhiều bất quy tắc: woman ~ women, foot ~ feet, sheep ~ sheep, deer ~ deer, tooth ~ teeth, mouse ~ mice, child ~ children, child ~ children,..
Danh từ kết thúc bằng “x, s, sh, ch, z” + es: box ~ boxes, watch ~ watches, dish ~ dishes,..
Danh từ kết thúc bằng “fe”: “fe” ~ “ve” +s: knife ~ knive, wife ~ wives,…
Danh từ kết thúc bằng “f: “f” ~ “v” + es : wolf ~ wolves, leaf ~ leaves.. .
Danh từ kết thúc bằng phụ âm + “o” chuyển sang dạng số nhiều thì thêm hậu tố “es”: potato ~ potatoes, tomato ~ tomatoes,…
Một số danh từ có cấu tạo kết thúc bằng “s”, tuy nhiên không phải dạng số nhiều, người dùng cần lưu ý để phân biệt như: mathematics, politics, physics…(các môn học), news, …
→ Không phải danh từ nào có “s” cũng là số nhiều và ngược lại, không phải danh từ nào thiếu “s” cũng là số ít. Do đó cần lưu ý về cách biến đổi của các danh từ này để sử dụng lượng từ phù hợp. Ta cũng nên sử dụng ngữ nghĩa của cụm từ và hàm ý hướng đến của câu để suy ra cách dùng động từ chính xác, thay vì rập khuôn cấu trúc, kém linh hoạt trong vận dụng.
